Attended by: Patty Mahoney, Jay Labedz, John Whyte, Bob McMahon, Marlene Tack, Rich Mich, Kathy Ripley, John Krerowicz
President Patty Mahoney called the meeting to order.
Approval of Minutes:
Meeting minutes from 2/28/06 were reviewed. The February minutes had not been previously reviewed. It was noted under 'Financial' that Band O Rama net profit was $133.00 because the award expenses were deducted from that line item. It was recommended that the award expenses be placed under a separate category called 'service awards' so that the profit will more accurately reflect the money brought in by selling items at Band O Rama. Under 'Summer Bands/KL' a correction was noted: '2 more directors are needed' and the spelling of Jeremy Kriedeman was corrected. A motion carried to accept the 2/28/06 meeting minutes with the corrections.
The 4/25/06 meeting minutes were reviewed. A correction was noted in the spelling of 'Neil' the electrician who helped under 'Ice Cream Social.'
A motion carried to accept the April minutes with the correction.
School Reports:
Bullen/Rambler: An email was received from John Nepper. All of the fundraisers went well for Rambler. He has key volunteers in place. The Bullen spring concert was held. They also played at Somers Elementary for the upper grades there.
Lance: Kathy Ripley reported that their final concert for 8th graders, choir and jazz band was coming up. Lance has a tradition that the 7th graders play for the 8th grade graduation. Their Minnesota trip went well.
Mahone: Kristie Weyrauch sent an email. Their concert was the same night as Boosters. They were doing some pieces featuring Mahone staff members and "Mallet Maniacs" with thanks for the mallets borrowed from ITA, Bradford, Lincoln and Mr. Stolfe. They enjoyed Breakfast with the Bands and about half of the Mahone students are participating in summer band.
Bradford: Paul Taylor sent an email. They completed their spring concert. They play at Honors Convocation. They took 1st at the St. Louis Music in the Parks Festival.
Kenosha Beats: Also in Mr. Taylor's email he reported that The Kenosha Beats finished their season with a concert performance on 5/12 along with Africa West percussion ensemble. He expressed thanks to the Boosters, John Stolfe, AM Community Credit Union, Lighthouse Brigade, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Deeter, Johnson Bank and the Education Foundation of Kenosha.
ITA: Keith Robinson sent an email. May 11th was their last concert. He has 49 students registered for band next school year.
Elementary: John Whyte thanked the Boosters for the reception following the spring concert. He also thanked Patty for the speech for the parents. The concert went very well. He pointed out that there are numerous band concerts held at the individual elementary schools combined with other year end activities. Mike Monk and Jeremy Kriedeman are gearing up for KL Band this summer.
District: Thanks for Booster support. Many great concerts are being performed by the various bands at the end of the school year and there has been wonderful parent involvement. The KUSD budget cuts are uncertain at this time. It is uncertain if any fine arts position cuts will be recommended.
Financial Report:
A written report was received. Highlights include:
- Summer band accounts show negatives but the dollars have been moved into the individual summer band accounts and the bands have not yet made deposits of the monies being paid by families.
- Add Kenosha Beats line item of + $969.52.
A motion carried to accept the financial report.
Fruit Sale:
No update.
Black Watch Trailer Painting:
Rich Mich spoke with Floyd Ishmael, Chuck Romano, and Ken Wiele. He reported that the current trailer was purchased by the Kiwanis in 1982. According to Floyd and Ray Larson, the trailer is not worth painting. The Kiwanis felt that they may be able to come up with the funds through a combined effort of their club and other area Kiwanis clubs. They feel that a new trailer would cost at least $12,000.00 and they may be able to come up with about $6,000.00. At this time it is uncertain if the Boosters would be asked to contribute. For this season, the Black Watch will rent a trailer for their Florida trip. However, Ken and Chuck asked Floyd to research the trailer costs before the Florida trip. The Boosters would like proposals on the trailer by the June meeting if at all possible.
Boosters received a $500.00 grant from the Lion's Club to be used toward the trailer painting. They will award the money to the Boosters at the July 11th banquet. Patty will follow up with the Lion's club.
The expired license plates on the truck/trailer have been taken care of.
Patty spoke with Ken Wiele regarding the parking of the truck in the Tremper parking lot versus in a fenced-in area. Mr. Wiele wants the truck/trailer at Tremper because they do not want to have to travel 15 minutes to access the truck.
Solo and Ensemble:
Our students did well.
Summer Bands:
Kristie asked Patty about funds for 2 students who could not afford summer band. Patty will inform Mr. Covelli and Kristie will check on the Verzal fund.
Jeff Verzal Memorial Fund:
Patty spoke with Mr. Covelli and explained that the Boosters do not want to administer the Verzal funds.
Major Fundraising Efforts/Grant:
John Stolfe continues to have an interest in serving on a capital campaign type committee. However, the development of this effort may take some time.
A grant was written to the Rotary requesting $3,800.00 for percussion equipment for the Kenosha Beats. It was felt that this was a reasonable request with the best probability for approval. The 'Wish List' is currently on hold pending the development of a capital campaign initiative.
Website:
John Krerowicz renewed the website for 2 years at $45.00. Unfortunately, a check was sent to the company and John needs to be reimbursed. It was suggested that the Kiwanis and Sousa award recipients be named on the website. Patty may ask the directors for names and possible photos.
Large Group Contest:
Concession money was discussed under financial report. Only one t-shirt was sold from the clothing displayed at the concession area.
5th grade reception:
Everything went well. Patty was grateful for Jackie Battersby who showed up to help. A flyer with Booster information was distributed. Cookies, water, soda and juice were served.
Breakfast with the Bands:
The griddle was obtained at the very last minute when the reserved griddle was found to be unavailable. Tom Mahoney found a griddle to use in Paddock Lake on the Thursday night before the event. The sausage links were delivered at the last minute and the basket raffle also came together at the last minute. But all went well.
The KL band will get some money from Pacetti's based upon their sales at Breakfast with the Bands.
$149.50 was earned through the sale of snacks, water and clothing. That money will be put toward the current deficit in the band apparel/clothing account.
$489.00 was earned through the raffle.
$2,836.00 was earned through ticket sales. Expenses were approximately $800.00. We received a bill for $225.53 for KUSD food service workers.
There was discussion about the date for the event next year. There was also some brainstorming about a possible evening event, serving pasta instead. The griddle seems to be an annual problem.
Gifting of Equipment/Uniforms:
Dr. Yontz will check on the status of the gifting of the equipment to KUSD.
The meeting adjourned.
